The complex mathematical formulas of the system reliability theory were replaced with pre-calculated tables. Some concepts of EN 954 were retained, i.e. categories, redundancy, monitoring. A number were modified, i.e. risk graph, selection of Categories.

ISO 13849-1:2015 provides safety requirements and guidance on the principles for the design and integration of safety-related parts of control systems (SRP/CS), including the design of software. For these parts of SRP/CS, it specifies characteristics that include the performance level required for carrying out safety functions. ISO 13849-1 was prepared by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) Technical Committee CEN/TC 114, Safety of machinery, in collaboration with Technical Committee ISO/TC 199, Safety of machinery, in accordance with the Agreement on technical cooperation between ISO and CEN (Vienna Agreement).

13.110 Safety of machinery. I EN ISO 13849-1 används kategorierna från EN 954-1 för att definiera systemets struktur, och därmed blir steget till de nya beräkningarna inte så stort om man har tidigare erfarenhet av kategorierna. I EN 62061 definieras strukturerna något annorlunda.
